A Lagoon as an Ecosystem
Alongside the dinosaurs, researchers found large numbers of other fossilised animals and plants at Tendaguru, including many marine animals. It is thought that there were shallow lagoons between the coast and the open sea, protected by reefs. The structure of those reefs, however, differed greatly from the coral reefs we know today. They mainly consisted of thick-shelled oysters and are known as reef thicket.
