For many animals, the wind has a special significance. Migrating birds travel thousands of miles without stopping, using prevailing winds to speed up their journey. Locusts let themselves be carried by air currents to find new feeding grounds. Even flying fish utilise updrafts to carry them through the air above the sea. The Pterosaurs that lived many millions of years ago, on the other hand, probably preferred it calm, as a strong gust of wind was likely to cause a crash landing.
