Research interests and projects

  • Phylogenetic analysis, evolutionary ecology and historical zoogeography, with a focus on molluscs
  • Taxonomy and systematics of non-marine gastropods
  • Evolution, systematics and zoogeography of subtropical and tropical fresh- and brackish water gastropods within the Cerithioidea i.e. Thiaridae sensu lato, Melanopsidae Pleuroceridae, Batillariidae, Potamididae
  • History and theory of biology, in particular evolutionary biology in the 19th and 20th century.
  • Phylogenetic analysis of marine and limnic Cerithioidea using morphological and molecular data
  • Evolution of viviparous reproductive strategies in limnic gastropods
  • Evolutionary ecology and speciation of limnic molluscs in so-called "ancient lakes", in particular:
Adaptive radiation of thalassoid snails in East African Lake Tanganyika
Evolutionary ecology of a radiation of limnic snails (Pachychilidae) ind the central lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia
  • Revision, systematics and zoogeography of Thiaridae sensu lato
  • Revision, systematics and zoogeography of Melanopsidae
