The Petrographical and Geological Collection comprises approximately 60,000 samples, divided into the following sub-collections:

• Regional Petrography (partially stored elsewhere)
• Systematic Petrography
• Impact Crater Rock
• Glacial Erratics (only igneous rock and metamorphites)
• Geological Collection (stored elsewhere altogether)

Only ten percent of all samples have currently been recorded in our database. The collection is growing continuously.

The Regional Petrography collection contains the oldest samples dating back to the late 18th and 19th century. These are mainly igneous and metamorphous rock from Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and Russia.

The Systematic Petrography collection was conceived for teaching purposes and contains samples of the most important igneous and metamorphous rock.

The comprehensive Impact Crater Rock is among the largest in the world. It focuses on European, Asian and African impact craters. This part of the collection has been digitally recorded in its entirety.

The Geological Collection was collated by Paul Ramdohr and contains ore minerals, ore samples and the relevant lodes of numerous classic ore deposits all over the world. This collection also contains a large number of historical samples from the Mineral Collection.
