Snapping turtle in the exhibition "Evolution in Action"

Cutaway Models

These preparations show the skeletal structure as well as the outer layers of some water-dwelling vertebrates. The fin-like extremities resemble each other. The skeletal structure, however, reveals the differences between the animals. The fin of the turtle is a scaly reptile leg, adapted to life in the water, whereas seals have furry mammalian legs and penguins feathered wings.
